Diarrhea is the formation and emission of stools of varying liquidity, often accompanied by flatulence and borborygmi (intestinal noises).

Are diarrhea and enteritis synonymous? No, they aren’t. Enteritis is an inflammatory process which, however, inevitably causes diarrheal phenomena.

Diarrhea in dogs is the body’s natural mechanism to rapidly remove toxic or infectious substances that have penetrated through the oral cavity. In practice, the body notably accelerates the intestinal contents’ transit speed to rapidly expel any unwanted substances. The natural consequence is feces with a varying level of liquidity, the result of a lacking absorption of the ingested food.

Differences between chronic diarrhea in dogs and acute diarrhea

It’s important to distinguish between acute and chronic diarrhea in dogs. The first, especially if not accompanied by fever and ailment, is fundamentally harmless and self-limiting: once the expulsion of unwanted substances is over, it spontaneously disappears without the need for any medication. Applying an adequate amount of lactic ferments may help.

Chronic diarrhea, on the other hand, can be the result of chronic inflammation, which requires appropriate therapy. Fortunately, in most cases, it is a symptom of "simple" food intolerance, but simple only if you know how to identify the food or foods causing the problem.
