Anal Glands in Dogs: disorders

Anal glands in dogs have quite common disorders, yet few owners know the actual causes or effective treatments for this condition. It is best to start with an explanation of the anal glands and their purpose.

These small glands, or anal sacs, are found near the anus in dogs, and the normal secretions from these glands allow a dog to mark its territory. The act of defecation normally facilitates the squeezing of the glands, which allows the secretions to exit through the ducts (small canals) that connect to the anus. When these secretions are obstructed and unable to be released, it leads to fistulas and abscesses. Once inflamed the resultant dog anal gland infection causes redness and swelling, itching, and pain. The dog responds by rubbing the inflamed visible part of the gland on the floor, licking them frequently and trying to sit.

Anal glands in dogs: the inflammation

Consequently, this obstruction is accompanied by an inflammatory process of the ducts, which provides an ideal breeding ground for germ infections. Most owners are unaware that the infection is a symptom rather than the cause of the inflammation. The inflammation is actually the body’s way of ridding itself of any toxic substances that may target the most sensitive organs such as the anal glands. The anal glands are one of the main organs that are affected by this type of inflammatory reaction.

Anal glands in dogs: cause of disorders and treatment

One of the most prevalent and growing causes of the inflammation that can lead to an Anal Gland Infection in Dogs is food intolerance. In the case of food intolerance, the inflammation is often the response to toxic substances such as the pharmaceuticals that are used to fight infection in heavily farmed animals from which the protein source for many dog foods are derived. The primary protein sources include chicken, beef or pork.

While a dog that is sensitive to these toxic substances will suffer an inflammation process lasting a few days after just one meal, if it is part of their daily diet, the problem becomes chronic. These Anal Gland Problems in Dogs can be frustrating for owners and vets, so they usually beginwith an eliminationdiet to determine if the dog food is the source of the toxic substances causing the inflammation and therefore, the dog anal gland infection.

If the dog food is the problem, traditional pharmacological remedies will not eliminate the cause of the recurring and chronic Anal Gland Problems in Dogs . The only effective long-term solution to food intolerance that targets and treats a dog anal gland infection is a change in diet.
